He studied at the Royal Conservatories of Antwerp and Brussels and obtained several prizes, including the first prize for flute, chamber music and hafabra direction. He also followed additional perfection courses in Belgium, Yugoslavia, The Netherlands, Poland and Sweden.

From 1972 until 1974, he was attached to the music chapel of the state police.

Together with the well-known pianist-composer-conductor François Glorieux he traveled through Belgium, The Netherlands, Germany and Yugoslavia on concert trips, and performed for Yugoslavian radio and television.

Ever since 1974 he has been attached to the Municipal academy of music as a teacher for flute classes and ensembles.

In October 1981, he founded the "Groot Harmonie Orkest" (the Big Harmony Orchestra) at the Academy. In 1985, he traveled to Germany with this orchestra on a concert trip. Due to school matters, this orchestra was divided in a woodwind and a brass choir. Jef Van Boven continued to conduct the woodwind ensemble and traveled to The Netherlands, Germany and Czechoslovakia with it. Again, this ensemble was divided in a clarinet orchestra and a flute choir in 1994.

In October 1995, he founded the "Jozef Pauly Ensemble". Not only did they perform in Belgium, they also went to The Netherlands, Germany, Hungary, France, Poland, Sweden, Czechoslovakia, Denmark, and in 2001, Australia. The ensemble obtained several international awards.

Jef Van Boven also performs concerts in a chamber music orchestra with guitar, ciacona and the ensemble Entr'Acte. He recorded for radio and television and went to Germany, Czechia and Poland on concert tours.

In 1987, he obtained the First Prize cum Laude as a guest conductor of the Campine Youth Fanfare Orchestra on the International Youth Music Festival in Neerpelt. Several times, he gave lessons on conducting techniques.

Since 1994, he's a member of the Concert Tournaments, which are organized by the Antwerp Province Government.

He is a lecturer to teachers of music academies concerning specialization in ensemble playing, a course established by the 'union of Belgian Cities and Municipals'

He is a member of 'Sabam'.

He was the winner of the 'Akerpijs 2002' (a prize for artistic meritoriousness from the District of Ekeren)
